I like that idea of FMF. It's definitely nice to have a group discuss writing with who doesn't come into the discussion with the baggage of assumptions about my personal life.
Definitely find value in FMF…easy, casual, and fun that helps get of my character world and interact in real life. My FMF are found at local Starbucks, Safeway, Target, and even my PCP office where the medical assistant and I talk about which reading platform is best. I don’t know a lot about of any of them and vice versa but I enjoy the simple exchange. Shows…nothing recently but looking into Hollywood Undead this fall as well as excited for Broadway’s Hells Kitchen in August. Thanks for sharing!
My childhood friend of 57 years is visiting us this week. She is single and lives alone. I read your essay to her and she laughed in all the right places and then at the end she commented that she thinks 5 minutes romances are very much worthwhile also. She enjoys flirting with a stranger at the checkout line or while selecting a melon in the produce aisle. These encounters she says make her feel alive and noticed. Knowing that nothing will likely develop from the brief encounter and she's okay with that.
In 2020 I started ordering our groceries for the first time. In a desperate attempt to keep some semblance of routine for the household, I usually did pickup around the same day and time. So I often saw the same guy. He was from Boston (had the accent and everything) and we’d occasionally chat for a moment or two while he loaded the groceries. I don’t know what he looked like (masks), but I know he didn’t miss the cold winters and donated a kidney to his best friend. He was the only stranger I interacted with off and on for almost a year. And then life slowly started to resume, and I never saw him again. So yeah, those FMF count.

Melon shopping is rife with potential.

I wonder where he went
I don’t know. But I wish him well and am grateful for our little 5 minutes.
